Middle English (in the sense ‘to wrangle’): from Old French plaidier ‘go to law’, from plaid ‘discussion’ (see plea).
USAGE
In a court of law, a person can plead guilty or plead not guilty. The phrase plead innocent, although commonly found in general use, is not a technical legal term. Note that one pleads guilty to (not of) an offense, and may be found guilty of an offense. See also usage at innocent.
裁判所で、人はplead guilty(有罪を認める)、もしくはplead not guilty(無罪を主張する)ことができる。plead innocent(無罪を主張する)というフレーズは、一般的な用法で広く見られるが、法律の専門用語ではない。ここで留意すべきなのは人が罪に対して有罪を認めて(plead guilty to an offense)、それから犯罪が有罪であるとわかる(be found guilty of an offense)かもしれないということだ。
