The Gaze of Tourism
Genron 0: Philosophy of Tourists explores the concept of The Gaze of Tourism. In the 19th Century, Paris became popular for its パサージュ, as depicted in this image: https://gyazo.com/182ef62f327694c3eb6f28f3b51aea4c. It is in this context that the origin of the concept of "ショッピングモール" can be traced.
A tourist can be defined as someone who immerses themselves in the landscape of their destination, much like a leisurely stroller. Tourists do not have the same practical needs as residents. They have no obligations to buy anything or go anywhere specific. For tourists, everything in their destination becomes a commodity and an exhibit, a neutral and passive object of their gaze. The gaze of tourism can be seen as viewing the entire world as a パサージュ or a ショッピングモール. It can be interpreted as the beginning of a Consumer Society.
