I think one reason why the elderly tend to be conservative is not only because of their declining energy and physical abilities, but also because they know so much about many things, and because they have acquired a multifaceted perspective on things, they become unable to make decisions. Last year, I came across an essay called "The Two Kinds of Moderate". It talks about how there are two types of moderation, not just those who are naturally inclined that way, but also those who become moderate "as a result" of swinging back and forth between extremes. It's exactly like that.
