Plutocracy is a society that is ruled or controlled by people of great wealth or income. The term was first used in English in 1631.1 Unlike most political systems, plutocracy is not rooted in an established political philosophy, and historically has been criticized. In ancient Greek, the term is derived from πλοῦτος (ploutos), meaning "wealth" and κράτος (kratos), meaning "power".
