Descriptions
English for Academic Purposes B is designed for 2-4 year students.
Students will gain understanding of university and academic writing with three paragraphs (written in a subjective tone) and one researched essay (written in an objective tone).
Classroom activities will involve group work and peer editing.
Objectives
To gain a working knowledge of the basic rhetorical and logical skills involved in various forms of written expression common and appropriate to aspects of academic, university and professional life.
This course should prepare you for writing academic papers in your academic field and as a set of communication tools for your future professional life.
Outcomes
Students will write three paragraphs; and one five-paragraph essay that then becomes a research paper.
The three paragraphs may include the following types: descriptive, comparison and contrast, process (how-to), narrative, summary, analysis, cause-and-effect, persuasive, and problem-solution.
Lesson content will improve the ability to logically express thoughts, opinions and/or research findings.
You will gain understanding of how to use academic citations and references.
This class is devised to help provide the following:• To broaden an outlook on Nature/Human Beings/ Society• To think logically and critically• To communicate ideas• To develop a sense of Internationalization (cross-cultural communication/knowledge of foreign languages/knowledge of other peoples/knowledge of International Affairs)To CV studentsThe Department of Civil Engineering designates this class under learning/education as “Type (E) Nature/Social Studies: Enhancing the ability to carry out Civil Engineering via a thorough grounding and a greater understanding of Nature/Humanities/Social Science”.
Course notes prerequisites
Students must earn a score of 60% or more and be in attendance for 2/3 of classes in order to pass.

このクラスの履修者数の上限は40名であり、初回授業出席者が40名を超えた場合は、初回授業において選抜(抽選)を行う。
初回授業において選抜が実施された場合、その後の履修者の受け入れは行わない。
なお、状況に応じて3年生以上の履修登録が優先される場合がある(ただし初回授業への出席は必須)。
Students wanting to take this class must attend from the first lesson.
The maximum number of students for this class is 40.
If the number of students hoping to register in the first lesson exceeds 40, students will be chosen (by lottery).
If the holding of a lottery in the first lesson becomes necessary, class registration will not be automatic.
Depending on the situation, 3rd and 4th year students wanting to register for the class will be given priority (but only those who attend the first class).
Preparation and review
Homework requirements will be explained in the first week.
Evaluation
