This study shows that viewing cute things improves subsequent performance in tasks that require behavioral carefulness, possibly by narrowing the breadth of attentional focus.
If viewing cute images narrows the breadth of attentional focus and facilitates systematic processing, it may degrade performance in tasks that require broader attentional focus and heuristic processing. Further research is needed to explore this hypothesis.
Our results are unique in experimental demonstration that baby schema modulates the mesocorticolimbic system.
By engaging the mesocorticolimbic system, baby schema could motivate caring for any infant by any potential caregiver in a group, regardless of kinship.
