Autobiographical design
自伝的デザインの要件は、研究者自身がreal needsを持っていること
(By ‘genuine’ usage we mean it is
based on true needs of the researchers, rather than them pretending to have needs expected of targeted users)
確かにbug fixとしてのドッグフーディングとは違う。でもドッグフーディングにautobiographical designが含まれていることは往々にして存在すると思う。
We caution that we are not articulating a “dogfooding”
approach. As we will describe, autobiographical design
goes beyond simply using a system to test for bugs or
validate the system before presenting it to end-users. It
involves long-term, genuine use.

genuine useに基づく知見が得られる
普通のユーザスタディでは難しい、超長期的な利用に基づく知見が得られる
デメリット
客観性がないことから、技術者・研究者倫理として問題ないのかに苦しめられることがある
practitionerは、それをなんとかするために各々の手立てでバイアスを減らそうと試みている
The core goal of this paper is to interpret insights fromthis project in the context of future research in HCI on thedesign of technologies for the home, particularly smarthomes and the Internet of Things (IoT).

vanを使っている中で、もともとは電気が必要だと思っていたので一時しのぎ的な"alternative solution"として携帯型ソーラーパネル充電器などを使っていたが、これがあれば意外といらないじゃんとなり、自分のニーズをちゃんと知ることができた。それをluxury of having timeと呼んでいる

Needsって簡単に言えるものではない
Although the project is over ten years old, in his emailexchange Gaver remembers thinking of the Video Window assomething that might be intriguing or enjoyable, but not assomething he and his wife ‘needed’. This example illustrateswell how ‘needs’ in autobiographical design might benefitfrom being considered in broader terms: as goals,motivations, curiosities, or interests for a design.
我々もそうだもんな。needなんだけど、厳密に言えばneedではない。とにかく自分がuserになるだけの十分な動機がある、ということが大事なんだろう。
The work was motivated by both a research interest and by the personal challenges ofmaintaining a relationship over distance—and was welldocumented to report on the dual motivations.
だし、Selfと言ってるけど複数人が関与していることもある。著者が誰かのために作っていたりとか、デザインconsultationで別の人が入っていたりとか。
As a result, autobiographicaldesign blurs the distinction between work and personal lifeand can put significant pressure on personal relationships.Such pressure might feel especially great during projectswith external demands, for example, in order for a master orPhD student to graduate.
