Park Soo-jin Advances to the Finals of the Women's 200m Butterfly at the World Championships... “I will try to burn it.”
Minseok Kim placed 15th in the men's 200m individual medley semifinals.
Park Soo-jin (24, Gyeongbuk Provincial Office) succeeded in advancing to the finals in the women's 200m butterfly at the World Aquatics Championships.
Park Soo-jin ranked 7th out of 16 people with a time of 2 minutes 09.22 seconds in the 200m butterfly semifinals at the 2024 International Aquatics Federation World Championships held at the Aspire Dome in Doha, Qatar on the 15th (Korean time) and secured a ticket to the finals, which is given to the top 8 people.
Park Soo-jin, who placed 6th out of 25 people with a time of 2 minutes 10.28 seconds in the preliminaries, improved her record by 1.06 seconds and passed the semifinals.
After the match, Park Soo-jin expressed her emotions through the Korea Swimming Federation, saying, "This is the moment I have dreamed of since I first competed in the World Championships in Kazan in 2015.
Although I was not satisfied with my record, I am honored to advance to the finals."
Park Soo-jin ranked 20th (2 minutes 11.07 seconds) in Kazan in 2015, and 18th place (2 minutes 09.44 seconds) in Budapest in 2017.
In Gwangju 2019, he placed 17th in the preliminaries, advanced to the semifinals with one top-ranked athlete withdrawing, and finished in 13th place (2 minutes 09.97 seconds).
Last year in Fukuoka, he only ranked 18th (2 minutes 11.20 seconds).
I also remember missing out on a medal at the 2023 Fall Hangzhou Asian Games, where I placed 4th with a time of 2:09.37.
However, this time in Doha, he will be competing in his first world championship final.
Park Soo-jin will participate in the women's 800m relay preliminaries on the afternoon of the 15th, and the 200m butterfly finals to be held at 1:02 am on the 16th.
He said, “(local time) the last race in the morning preliminaries is the 800m relay, and the first race in the afternoon finals is the 200m butterfly.
“I have to play without stopping,” he said, “but I am worried whether I will be able to endure physically because the amount of training is not enough yet.”
Still, I will do my best one by one, like breaking a seal.
“I will try to set it on fire,” he pledged.
Korea’s best result in the women’s 200m butterfly world championships is Ahn Se-hyun’s 4th place (2 minutes 06.67 seconds) in the finals of the 2017 Budapest Games.
Kim Min-seok (22, Busan) was in the semifinals of the men’s 200m individual medley.
