Pepsi Pavilion for Expo '70
E.A.T. (Experiments in Art and Technology) organized the design, construction, and programming of the Pepsi-Cola Pavilion at Expo '70 in Osaka, Japan, starting in September 1968. The project began when sculptor Robert Breer introduced Billy Klüver to David Thomas from Pepsi-Cola, who proposed involving artists in the pavilion's design. Klüver and Breer selected artists Forrest Myers, Robert Whitman, and David Tudor to collaborate, each contributing their expertise in sculpture, immersive theater, and electronic performance. Architect John Pearce also joined the team. The Pavilion featured a dynamic environment with visual and sound elements, allowing visitors to create their own experiences. The main dome was a large mirror reflecting visitors on a patterned floor, with sound and light systems that changed the experience. Inside, it served as a performance space for American and Japanese artists, with continuous programming throughout Expo '70. Outside, various artist-engineer teams designed elements like a water vapor fog sculpture, sound-emitting floats, and laser light installations. The Pavilion, with its innovative, responsive environment, drew over 3 million visitors, who spent longer on average than at other pavilions. It was a groundbreaking example of combining art, technology, and interactivity.
E.A.T.（Experiments in Art and Technology）は、1968年9月から日本の大阪で開催された万博（Expo '70）のペプシコーラ・パビリオンのデザイン、建設、プログラム制作を担当しました。プロジェクトは、彫刻家ロバート・ブリーアがペプシコーラのデイヴィッド・トーマスにビリー・クリューヴァーを紹介したことをきっかけに始まり、トーマスがパビリオンのデザインにアーティストを参加させることを提案しました。クリューヴァーとブリーアは、彫刻、没入型シアター、電子パフォーマンスの専門家であるフォレスト・マイヤーズ、ロバート・ウィットマン、デイヴィッド・チューダーを選出しました。建築家ジョン・ピアースもチームに加わりました。 パビリオンは視覚と音の要素を組み合わせたダイナミックな環境で、訪問者が自らの体験を創造できるよう設計されていました。メインドームはパターン化された床に映る来場者を反射する大きな鏡で、音響および照明システムによって体験が変化しました。内部はアメリカおよび日本のアーティストによるパフォーマンススペースとして利用され、万博期間中は継続的なプログラムが行われました。外部には、アーティストとエンジニアのチームによって、水蒸気の霧の彫刻、音を発するフロート、レーザー光インスタレーションなどが設置されました。
この革新的かつ反応的な環境を持つパビリオンは300万人以上の来場者を魅了し、他のパビリオンよりも長時間滞在する人が多かったと言われています。これはアート、テクノロジー、インタラクティビティの融合による画期的な例となりました。
