9 Evenings: Theatre and Engineering
In 1965, ten New York artists collaborated with over thirty engineers and scientists from Bell Telephone Laboratories to create art using new technology. The participating artists included John Cage, Lucinda Childs, Öyvind Fahlström, Alex Hay, Deborah Hay, Steve Paxton, Yvonne Ranier, Robert Rauschenberg, David Tudor, and Robert Whitman. The engineers contributed over 8,500 man-hours, and many other artists, composers, and technical experts assisted with the preparation and performance of the pieces. This collaboration culminated in the event 9 Evenings: Theatre and Engineering, held from October 13 to 23, 1966, at the 69th Regiment Armory in New York. Over 10,000 people attended the event, which had a lasting impact on both the participating artists and the younger artists in the audience. 9 Evenings marked a pivotal moment in art, dance, and music, signaling the start of a new era where artists began incorporating technology into their work.
