What to say at checkout time
When you go to a konbini or supermarket and you arrive at the cashier, they may ask you one to three questions which you may not understand if you are a beginner in Japanese languge. Before continuing, it's good to review basic Japanese language if you don't know them already. A. Would you like a bag? B. Do you have a bag?
A. fukuro wa irimasuka?
B. fukuro wa yoroshii deshoka?
I'm ok (大丈夫です。)
daijobu desu
I have my bag and I don't need it
fukuro ha irimasen
I'd like a bag.
fukuro wo kudasai
Note:
It's a law that plastic bags are not given automatically. They cost about 3 yen each. The word to listen for is "fukuro" which means bag.
Do you have a points card?
pointo kaado o mochi desuka?
I don't have one. )
nai desu
Or, just take out your discount / reward card and pass it to them 😉
Would you like to pay with cash?
genkin de haraimasuka?
Yes, I'll use cash.
hai, genkin de
I'll use card.
kaado de
Note
Sometimes this is asked at supermarkets like Gyomu super "genkin" means cash
