Mt. Hiei is the tallest mountain near Kyoto. It has a famous temple, Enryakuji, Garden museum Hiei, great views of Kyoto, and a view of Lake Biwa to the north east.
It is usually a little cooler at the top than the valley where Kyoto sits, so it can be a good place to escape some of the summer heat.
It's good to check in advance if the eizan line, cable car, and ropeway are in operation as the may be closed for maintenance or repairs after a typhoon, etc.
To get to Mt. Hiei there are a few options but the most scenic and popular choice takes about 1-1.5 hours and is as follows:
Start at DemachiYanagi station
Take the Eizan line and ride until Yase-hiezanguchi
Follow the signs to the Yase cable car.
ben.icon Technically it is a funicular style. It provides some very nice views across Kyoto.
At the small station, switch to the Hiei ropeway for the last short ascent to the top.
When you arrive you will be at the Garden museum Hiei and you can take a short bus to Enryakuji
Notes
Alternately, you can enjoy hiking some or all of the route up the mountain, depending on weather conditions and season.
