Mercedes: Oh no! This isn't right! Now what am I supposed to do?
アッシュ: どうしたの、メルセデス？
Ashe: What's the matter, Mercedes?
メルセデス: お料理の味つけが、思ったより甘くなっちゃって……
Mercedes: I accidentally made this food much sweeter than I wanted...
アッシュ: そっか、ちょっと味見させてもらえる？どれどれ……
うーん、確かにちょっと……こういう時は、この香辛料を少し入れてみたらどうかな。
Ashe: Let me taste it.
Hmm, yeah, a little sweet. What if we try adding a few spices?
メルセデス: あら……？ とっても美味しくなったわ～！アッシュって、お料理が上手なのねえ。
Mercedes: Huh? This is delicious! You're an amazing cook, Ashe!
アッシュ: 昔、僕の親が酒場をやってたからね。小さい頃から、よく手伝ってたんだ。
Ashe: My dad used to own a restaurant. I helped out a lot around the kitchen, even as a little kid.
メルセデス: 小さな頃から立派にお仕事してたなんて～。だからアッシュはしっかりしてるのね。
はあ……私もアッシュを見習ったら、しっかり者になれるかしら～。
Mercedes: Wow, that's a lot of responsibility to take on at an early age. No wonder you always work so hard.
I might learn something if I watch you cook!
アッシュ: いやいや、見習ってもらえるほどすごいってわけじゃないよ……。
多少料理に慣れてるだけで……それに、君だって、お菓子作りは上手じゃないか。
Ashe: Well, no promises.
I just have a little bit of experience, that's all. But look at you—you're great at baking cakes!
メルセデス: う～ん。確かにお菓子作りは得意だけれど、お料理の味つけはまだまだみたい～……。
ほら、私って、辛いもの苦手じゃない？苦手なものは上手く作れないのかも～。
……そうだ、閃いたわ～！ 辛いものが苦手なせいで上手く作れないんだから～……
とっても辛いお料理を食べられたら、上手く作れるかもしれないってことよね～！
Mercedes: It's true that I'm quite good at baking, but I'm not the best when it comes to seasoning.
Maybe it's because I don't like spicy food? It's tough to make food taste good when you don't enjoy it.
I just had an idea! If the reason I can't cook spicy food is because I don't like it...
Then all I have to do is eat some spicy food! If I learn to like it, then I'll be better at making it, right?
アッシュ: え、ええ……？ それは違うんじゃ……？何でそうなっちゃったんだ……？
Ashe: I don't know. Maybe? What makes you say that?
メルセデス: そうと決まれば、善は急げだわ～。早速、辛いお料理を作ってみましょう。
Mercedes: No, no, no. None of that matters. Once I've made a decision, I have to go with it! I'll make something spicy right away!
アッシュ: ううーん、やっぱり違う気がするけど……
このまま放っておくと、もっと大変なことになりそうだしなあ……
Ashe: Oh, this won't end well.
If I leave her to it, she'll make an even bigger mess.
メルセデス: ねえ、アッシュ！ 厨房にある調味料で、辛い味つけに使うのはどれ～？ これ？
Mercedes: Hey, Ashe! Which seasonings should I use? These ones?
アッシュ: ああ、待ってメルセデス、ちゃんと教えるから！
Ashe: Um, hold on, Mercedes! Let me show you!
アッシュ: その香草は肉料理に合うんだけど、炒め物には……
Ashe: That one goes best with meat, but for stir-fry, what you really want is this...

Mercedes: Whoa! What happened? The pan's smoking!
アッシュ: メルセデス！？ ど、どうしたの！？うわっ、何だこの煙！ うえっ、げほっ！
目、目がかゆい……！鼻が痛い……！
Ashe: Mercedes! What's going on?!
Agh, my eyes! I can barely breathe!
メルセデス: あら、アッシュ、良いところに～。お料理がなかなか上手くいかなくって～。
Mercedes: Oh! Ashe! I'm so glad you're here! My cooking's not going very well at all...
アッシュ: い、いったい何を入れたのさ！こんなことになるなんて……！
Ashe: What did you put in there?!
メルセデス: この香辛料と、その調味料と～、それからそこの棚の香草を入れて、油で炒めたわ～。
Mercedes: I used some of this spice, that seasoning, and the herbs on the top shelf. Then I started frying it in oil.
アッシュ: その香草、目潰しの煙幕にも使う一番辛いやつだよ！ わわわ、大変だ！
とにかく火を消して、鍋に蓋をして……よし、これで煙は収まった！ けど……
Ashe: That explains it. We use that herb for smoke bombs!
Just turn the heat off and cover the pan!
メルセデス: た、大変……食堂にいた人たちは、大丈夫じゃないみたいね～……。
Mercedes: Oh no! The people in the dining hall don't look so good...
アッシュ: あわわ……み、皆さん、すみません！とりあえず食堂の外に出てくださーい！
Ashe: Sorry, everybody! Could we clear out the dining hall for a few minutes, please?
アッシュ: はあ……な、何とかなったね。怒られただけで済んで良かった……。
もし敵襲だと勘違いされてたら、危うく大混乱だったよ……。
Ashe: Well, some folks were a little annoyed, but at least we got the place cleared out.
It's a good thing no one mistook all that smoke for an attack. That could have been a disaster.
メルセデス: 本当に、ごめんなさいね……私ったら、いつもこうで～……
Mercedes: I'm so sorry. I always mess everything up.
アッシュ: ……いや、違うよ。僕がちゃんと、香辛料や香草の扱いを教えていればよかったんだ。
はあ……僕って駄目だなあ。今だって、もっと上手くやれてれば……
Ashe: No, it's my fault. I should have taught you which herbs to avoid.
Don't blame yourself.
メルセデス: そうねえ……。私も次は、もっと上手くやってみるわ～。
Mercedes: I just need to figure out how to do it right for next time.
アッシュ: ……えっ。
つ、次はって、メルセデス……。もしかして、まだ続ける気？
Ashe: Next time?
You still want to try again, even after all that?
メルセデス: あら、もちろんよ～。だって、もったいないじゃない？
Mercedes: Of course! If I didn't, that would just be a waste of everything you taught me.
アッシュ: もったいない……？
Ashe: I guess that's true.
メルセデス: 失敗したままやめちゃったら、それで終わりになっちゃうでしょう？
Mercedes: If you quit every time you made a mistake, then you'd never learn anything, right?
アッシュ: ……確かに、それもそうだね。そっか、そういう考え方もあるんだな。
Ashe: That's a great point.
メルセデス: あっ、そう言えば、さっきの香草。たぶん、油で炒めたから煙が出ちゃったのよね～？
だったら、水を入れて煮込んじゃえば、煙も出なくなるんじゃないかしら～？
ねえ、アッシュ。それならどうかしら～？
Mercedes: Ah! Maybe my mistake was frying the herb in oil.
If I had boiled it instead, then there wouldn't be smoke.
What do you think, Ashe?
アッシュ: え？ あ、うん。煮込むんだね。……そうだね、それならきっと大丈夫だよ。
Ashe: Boiling, huh? Yeah, that'd be fine.
メルセデス: 良かったわ～。じゃ、次はもっと頑張るわね～！
Mercedes: Great! I'm gonna get this right next time for sure!

Mercedes: I used that herb you suggested. Boiling it gave off such a lovely aroma.
I think I used the right amount of spice too. Even I could eat it without burning my tongue!
I'm a much better cook now, thanks to you.

アッシュ: うん、もちろんだよ！……僕こそ、君にお礼を言いたかったんだ。
Ashe: Definitely! I should thank you too.

Ashe: Seeing you persevere has made me really happy.

アッシュ: あ、いや、そ、そういう好きじゃなくて！義兄さんに似てるって言いたかったんだ！
Ashe: Ah, I didn't mean it that way. I was actually thinking about my brother.
メルセデス: あらあら？アッシュにはお兄さんがいたの～？
Mercedes: What a relief! I didn't even know you had a brother!
アッシュ: あ、えっと、厳密には僕の兄じゃなくって。僕の養父だったロナート様のご子息だよ。
僕の義兄さんは、いつも前向きで……失敗しても、次があるって笑ってた。
僕が失敗して落ち込んだ時には、いつも必ず励ましてくれて……。
一緒に頑張れば、次はきっと上手くいくから、って。
義兄さんと一緒にいれば、いつも明るい気持ちになれたんだ。
Ashe: He was the son of Lonato, my adoptive father. I always called him my brother though.
Failure never got to him. All he'd ever do is laugh and try again.
Whenever I was feeling down about a setback, he would cheer me up.
He'd say something like, "Don't worry. We'll tackle it together next time."
I was always happy to have him around.
メルセデス: そう……とっても素敵な人だったのね、あなたのお義兄さんって。
Mercedes: He sounds like a wonderful person.
アッシュ: うん、本当に！ ……君といると、何だか、義兄さんを思い出すんだ。
Ashe: He was. And I get the same feeling from you.
メルセデス: アッシュ……。私はおっちょこちょいで、あなたにも迷惑をかけてばっかりだし～……
あなたのお義兄さんみたいには、なれないかもしれないけれど……
あなたの側にいてあげることくらいは、私にも、できるかしらね～。
Mercedes: I've done nothing but bother you with frivolous little things.
I'm sure I could never be like your brother...
But I'd like to stay by your side... If you'll have me...
アッシュ: どういうこと……？
Ashe: What do you mean?
メルセデス: あなたの側で、あなたが落ち込んだ時には頑張りましょうって励ましてあげる。
それくらいになら、こんな私にだってできると思うから～。
Mercedes: I want to be there to help you in times of need, or to cheer you up when you're feeling down.
I should be able to manage that without doing too much damage!
アッシュ: ……そっか。ありがとう、本当に……心強いよ。
君のこと、これからも頼りにしてる。これからもよろしく、メルセデス！
Ashe: I'm glad to hear you say that.

後日談
全章共通
戦後、アッシュは騎士の位に叙され、後継者のいなかったガスパール家の家督相続を認められた。
メルセデスはそんなアッシュの元に嫁ぎ、彼の政務を傍らで支え続ける。若く、経験も浅い領主を認めぬ者が多かったこともあり、アッシュには試練が次々と降りかかる。
しかし如何なる逆境の中でも、アッシュは挫けなかった。
妻の献身的な支えと励ましが、彼を奮い立たせたのだろう。
メルセデスが夫を励ますために作ったという甘い焼き菓子は、慶事の日に夫婦が贈り合う菓子として後世に伝わっている。
After the war, Ashe was formally knighted and appointed the new head of House Gaspard, which had no successors.
The young and inexperienced lord faced a great deal of difficulty in governing. Though he was famously tenacious and never lost heart, it was perhaps only due to the constant counsel of his wife, Mercedes, that he managed to overcome all obstacles.
When not busy governing their territory, the couple lifted one another's spirits by baking delicious sweets for each other. The tradition was so heartwarming that it became popular for husbands and wives in that region to do the same for generations.
