The top is a small world
The top 1% of anything is a selective group as it is. Slice that group down further into computer-enthusiasts, financial investors, and entrepreneurs, and its likely everyone knows everyone.
In The Man Who Solved the Market, a trading firm called D.E. Shaw was one of the firm quantitative trading firms. On its staff was a man by the name of Jeffery Bezos. What is interesting about this story, is what the founder of the firm, Shaw, was quoted as saying" "I think people will buy things on the internet. Not only will they shop, but when they buy something...they're going to post reviews."
According to the book, Bezos let the investment firm a few years later (mind you this is the late 1980's) and drove to Seattle to start a little company called Amazon.
