Vol.50: The Works for Percussion 3 (mode 272)

"+-" plus minus | Takehisa Kosugi

“Plus/Minus” is a piece by Japanese composer and violinist Takehisa Kosugi, which is an avant-garde artist associated with the Fluxus movement, a major influence for Sonic Youth. This piece, however, was written in 1987, when Fluxus as a coherent movement had already pretty much disbanded. Kosugi himself adapted the piece for the SY-led ensemble and also performed with them.

The original composition is basically there is a grid of 12x10 plus and minus signs that are presented without further instructions.

Therefore, it is thoroughly structured and thoroughly open to interpretation at the same time. Winant describes the piece as

(…) a graphic score with different rows of plus signs, minus signs and vertical lines, which tell the players to rise, go lower, or make an open choice, respectively. The time frame is open, as is how to go from one symbol to the next.

"Plus/Minus "は、ソニック・ユースに大きな影響を与えたフルクサス運動に関連した前衛的なアーティストである日本人作曲家・ヴァイオリニストの小杉武久の作品である。しかし、この曲は1987年に書かれたもので、フルクサスがすでに解散していた頃の作品である。小杉自身がSY率いるアンサンブルのために編曲し、共演もしている。

原曲は基本的に12×10のプラスとマイナスの記号がグリッド状に並んでいて、それ以上の指示がなくても提示されている。

そのため、徹底的に構造化されていると同時に、解釈の自由度も高い。ウィナントはこの作品を次のように説明しています。

(…) プラス記号、マイナス記号、垂直線の異なる行で構成されたグラフィックスコアで、それぞれプレイヤーに上昇、下降、またはオープンな選択を指示します。時間枠は、1つのシンボルから次のシンボルに移動する方法であるように、開いています。
