We (currently several members of Hasegawa Lab at Tokyo Institute of Technology. But we are looking for people to work together) are developing an online communication tool that complements communication in the age of social distance.
Online party
Problem to solve
Cocktail parties have multiple conversation circles, where people move around the circles and talk to many people. With existing video conferencing tools, it's difficult to reproduce such communication because there must be one room for each conversation circle and you cannot know what occurs in the other rooms.
In this project, we will create an online video conversation tool that can reproduce a conversation like a cocktail party. It is a tool that allows you to participate in a conversation while walking around the circles of conversation and to naturally understand the existence and state of multiple circles of conversation.
Proposal
People can use both ears to know the direction of the sound source. Also, it complements the content of the conversation from the movements of the mouth and facial expressions and distinguishes the voice of the conversation partner from among many voices. Utilizing them, we will create a tool that allows us to communicate while moving around the conversation circle with a simple operation while feeling the state of multiple conversation circles and the participants.
Progres
Both the client and server work well. we use this tool for our weekly meetings. We also test it with 100 bot participants and confirm it works with up to around 100 participants.　Please try https://binaural.me/
Related works
https://spatial.chat/ realizes to participate in the conversation while moving the circle of multiple conversations by changing the volume according to the distance. Since there is no sound localization, it is difficult to find where the voice originates when you hear the voice of other conversations.
Online salon
What is the role of the office? From work to meetings, why do white-collar workers who can work on laptops need to spend their commute time gathering in the office?
It has been pointed out that there are unintended encounters and conversations (meetups) that arise from them in the office, and this is the source of new ideas and plans. We will also consider a tool to realize such meetups online after the cocktail party.
