Activities of the Day
The ongoing rains interrupt the activities at HPC by flooding the area rendering the school inaccessible and most roads impassable. In extreme rain situations, the dancing area also fills with water forcing the students to continuously mop it out to prevent them from slipping and injuring themselves during the practice sessions. That impacts the practice time and quality negatively as the students have to constantly stop and shelter if the rain is too much.

The recital team is lucky to be practicing under a shelter hence are not affected much by the ongoing rains and cold. Their practice sessions are fair on as usual uninterrupted. The effect the rains have had on the recital team is reduced attendance as most of the demographic in the recital team are young kids who are often restricted by their parents from coming to the activities due to the flooding and raging rivers.

Despite the weather challenge the kids still brace the elements and attend the activities, although the attendance has been affected significantly. We are hoping the rains will subside and its effects reduced to allow normalcy to resume with the activities. However, the practice has to continue and therefore every stakeholder must sacrifice and attend the Saturday activity and play their part amidst the challenging weather.

The morning session started quite late as we had to wait for the kids to arrive after the rains had subsided. When a quorum was reached the dance instructor kicked off the class for the attending students. The session was quite thrilling and the kids put forward their best foot as they are always thrilled to learn new choreographies. The session went on until time for the first porridge break when the kids had to warm over a cup of porridge.
After the break, we resumed the second session of practice, at this point the weather was clear and it had stopped raining hence the kids could practice more freely and efficiently. It was the most productive session of the day and it proceeded to lunchtime when the kids were tired from practicing we had to call it a day for that Saturday as it was already threatening to rain again.

As it was a half day of activities, we didn’t have lunch prepared for the kids instead we had a brief meeting with them to discuss the upcoming reopening of schools as the teachers shared some pieces of advice. We also got feedback from the kids on how the activities are proceeding and how we can make it better for them and everyone else.
Recommendation
With the rains interrupting the activities almost every other Saturday, the kids can't wait for the shelter to be built in August to provide a shed for them during the harsh weather. We also hope the local administration will do something about the failed drainage system at Mukuru kwa Njenga to prevent flooding that affects accessibility in the area.
