Our Approach - Physical Mixed Reality Interface for Education
What is Physical Mixed Reality?
We are working on a physical mixed-reality project, in which we merge virtual objects into the real world by using mixed-reality display technologies with user interfaces embedded into physical space in order to augment experiences.
The digital/virtual objects are digitized or synthesized objects, mathematical formulas, computational algorithms, or simulated artificial life etc.
Feel digital objects physically
In the project, we developed physical mixed-reality displays so that users can naturally interact with virtual, digital, or conceptual things in a physical context.
The users can physically touch, feel, and share the digital entity in the real world. Therefore, the users can enlarge their experiences to take them beyond their physical constraints and limitations.
The primary purpose of this project is to create new educational tools in various fields such as chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, programming and so on.
Creating new educational materials and tools
In our proposed approach, we developed devices using various types of mixed-reality interfaces, including head-mounted displays, aerial imaging displays, projectors, and embedded displays in physical instruments.
These devices can mediate physical experiences by overlaying virtual objects on a person’s direct view of the real world; this experience is also shared by all the participants (i.e., users and other people in the vicinity).
