意味の区別に混乱する動詞

T先生：疑うって意味の英語は２つある。doubtとsuspectね。

doubtはそう思ってない。suspectはそう思ってる（だと疑っている）　 だよ。

太郎がお金を盗ったんじゃないか（と疑っている）。

We ( suspect / doubt ) that Taro stole the money.

そう思っている（そうだと疑っている）だよね、suspectが正解。

彼女は彼がハーバード代を出ていないと疑っていた。

She ( suspected / doubted ) (that) he graduated from Harvard.

彼がハーバード大を出たと思ってないので、doubted が正解。

気をつけよう

doubt that...は、that以下の内容を「そうじゃないと思う」＝疑う。

suspect that...は、that以下の内容を「そうだろうと思う」＝疑う。

We ( suspect ) that Taro stole the money.

私たちは疑っている　太郎がそのお金を盗ったと。
