Abstract:
Meta Table β is a table where people in remote locations share an atmosphere with each other in an avatar robot cafe.
Avatar robot cafe is a cafe where people with disabilities who have difficulty going out can engage in telework using avatar robots. We started a limited time experimental cafe with 10 people with disabilities in 2018, and opened a permanent exhibition in 2021. Today, more than 50 people with disabilities from around the world work at the avatar robot cafe via the Internet. Operating an avatar robot and serving customers in a café requires a high level of skill. Not only do they have to operate the robot, but they also have to talk to customers and sometimes even pick up on cues from the conversation and atmosphere. As more and more people with disabilities work as pilots, we have found that we need to support their communication skills as well as their ability to operate the Avatar robots. We developed the Meta Table β beta as a cybernetic avatar technology that combines robotics, AR, VR, and AI to augment human capabilities.
Meta Table β is a new application for avatar robot cafes. The pilot operating the avatar robot shares the atmosphere with the customers of the café by (1) recognizing the atmosphere with the support of AI and (2) using CG avatars combined with a transparent display and projection mapping.
The Meta Table β allows those who have difficulty going out to share the atmosphere with customers remotely, expanding opportunities for social participation.
