Literary Criticism

In The World of Lévi-Strauss, there is a unique type of criticism called Art criticism that stands out from other forms of Criticism. Unlike Music Criticism or Art criticism, which are not expressed through sound or color, Art criticism utilizes the same medium as the work itself. This form of criticism is known as 文芸批判 in Japanese.

One distinguishing feature of 文芸批判 is its use of Natural Language, the same material as the work it analyzes. This sets it apart from other types of criticism. It can be considered a 超=言語（Méta-language）, a meta-level language expression about language expression. In other words, it is super=literature, a form of literature that inevitably makes literature itself a subject.

According to tkgshn, this means that 文芸批判 is fundamentally different from criticism in other cultural domains such as art and music. While these forms of criticism do not utilize the same materials as the works they analyze (music criticism is not expressed through music), 文芸批判 is a 超=言語（Méta-language）, a language expression about language expression.
