Decentralized Identity is a concept that is gaining traction in the crypto world. It refers to the idea of individuals having control over their own digital identities, rather than relying on centralized authorities. Several projects are working on developing protocols for decentralized identity, including Ontology, Bright ID, Idena, Serto, and Gitcoin. Ontology is focused on bringing trust, privacy, and security to Web 3.0 through decentralized identity and data solutions. They are developing a comprehensive ID infrastructure, including an ID wallet for easy creation of digital IDs, a cross-chain reputation protocol for verifiable reputation, and a DeFi protocol that enables uncollateralized lending using decentralized ID and self-sovereign reputation. Bright ID is a social identity network that allows individuals to prove that they only have one account. Creating a digital ID is as simple as installing an app and participating in a verification process. With Bright ID, you can enjoy the benefits of having your own unique ID directly from the app. Idena is the world's first proof-of-person blockchain based on the principles of democracy. Every user has a cryptographic ID and is considered a unique human with equal voting rights and mining income. To start mining on the Idena network, unique individuals who operate validator nodes do not need to disclose personal data (no KYC required). They participate in a verification ceremony and solve a series of flip tests (human-made CAPTCHAs) to prove their uniqueness. Serto is a decentralized identity platform that aims to enable easy and secure data exchange in a private and scalable manner. It allows for easy verification of the issuers of any data and converts free-form data into verifiable credentials. These credentials can be issued to partners and customers and integrated into processes with other parties in a trusted manner. Gitcoin is a community that connects developers working on digital public goods, creating economic freedom, and defining the future of the open web. With the Gitcoin Passport, you can use the same ID you use for Gitcoin Grants to prove your identity and earn rewards in integrated dApps. In addition to these projects, there are other initiatives exploring the potential of decentralized identity. DFINITY's Internet Identity is one such example. It aims to eliminate the need for usernames and passwords by providing a secure and decentralized identity solution. More information about DFINITY's Internet Identity can be found here(https://note.com/cml_2010/n/n65fc4f7911b4). There are also real-world applications of blockchain-based identification systems. For example, the ID2020 project, which involves collaboration between Microsoft, Accenture, the United Nations, NGOs, and governments, aims to provide means of proving one's existence to people without official identification. They are exploring the use of blockchain technology to incorporate biometric authentication systems used by organizations like the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). This could be used to manage services such as shelter, food distribution, and financial transactions for those who have been left behind by society.
